CHAPTER 17

HAWK SLEPT HARD all night despite the fact that everything about the exchange and near miss with the Reaper weighed heavily on his mind. If it hadn’t been for Alex, the Reaper could’ve obliterated London Bridge as well as other parts of the city. There was no reason to think Fazil would’ve exacted his revenge in other ways as well if he maintained control of the drone.

The challenge looming was how to locate Davenport and bring him home safely. It was a large task that would require weeks of research—unless Hawk could cut to the chase and find the one person who could tell him what was happening among the hardliners in the Muslim community without drawing any suspicion. The situation was already destined to be delicate as it was given that a Muslim-based terrorist organization was claiming full responsibility and promising another show.

Hawk spent most of the day working with Alex to break down everything they could from the footage of the exchange. Alex spoke with the leader of the cyber crimes division from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command. She debriefed him on everything she noticed during the hijacking of the Reaper as well as the CCTV outage that allowed Fazil and his crew to escape. Meanwhile, Hawk spoke with several MI5 agents about the most likely area in the city that could be cultivating a new generation of terrorists. One of the agents suspected a mosque in Finsbury Park, suggesting that if there was any mosque capable of radicalizing Muslims for jihadist causes, that was the one.

Hawk wanted to check it out immediately, but Alex warned him against it. After getting wind of what Hawk wanted to do, Blunt called one of his friends at the CIA to see what information they had on the mosque, which turned out to be a fortuitous call. The CIA liaison informed Blunt that they had plenty of intel on the mosque and its activities but recommended talking to an agent they had embedded there named Joe Calder. Calder went by Malik in London and gave Blunt an address.

“Be careful talking to him,” Blunt said as he handed over the details to Hawk. “We don’t want to spook anyone who might be watching him. Just be as discreet as possible.”

“Always,” Hawk said.

He checked his watch. It was 5:30 p.m., and Hawk decided to grab something to eat before paying Calder a visit.

After dinner, Hawk bypassed Calder’s apartment lobby security by following an elderly woman inside and offering to help her with her groceries. Hawk felt a little slimy for his tactic, even though he concluded he likely would’ve given the lady a hand any way.

Hawk jimmied the lock to get inside before re-securing the door and taking a seat in a chair in the far corner. He sat waiting until around 7:30 p.m. when a key was inserted into the door. Hawk waited until Calder was fully inside before turning on a reading lamp next to the chair.

“What the bloody hell?” Calder said, setting his groceries down.
